RacsOview: The Fall
Quite possibly the best movie I have seen so far this year (still torn between this and Wall-E). Post "The Cell" (A movie I dearly love) Tarsem Singh has been absent and to hear from Ja of MyNewPlaidPants that he will be back with Lee Pace (from the best comedic TV show last year "Pushing Daisies") I was very much excited to hear the news.
The Fall follows the story of a paralyzed stuntman Roy Walker who befriends a young girl Alexandria to steal morphine (morphin3) for him in exchange for mind boggling, ultra violent but colorful fantasy stories. From what could be promising adventurous edge of your seat stories were turned to violent hopeless quest when all hell broke loose when all hope were lost from stuntman Roy.
Singh created vibrant two worlds coninciding dream and reality creating a waking life like sequences all taking us in for one helluva ride. Singh did this feat almost a decade ago, he created a scary and vivid imagery of a killer's demented mind, this time he walked the same path but made a complete 360 degree turn to create a whimsical world, tossing in beautiful imagery and some plain oddness (the tribal map dance made me chuckle but I sorta liked it) of a fickle minded stuntman scheming to get what he needed (wanted) from a young child.
Lee Pace in the titular role as the Roy Walker and the story's Blue Bandit was charismatic and stepped up his game creating a sad sad character, desperate and on the verge of suicide giving what could be his best performance to date. Catinca Untaru as the young Walker follower gave a very superb turn as the innocent and naivette Alexandria. Techinically the movie was a success across the board, from the cinemography to the editing to its aural aspects, everything meshed to build up Singh's intricately made world.
Many people may find this too boggling or too ambitious, but for me Singh was able to achieve his goal and deliver his message. This is truly a gift, a gem, you will truly fall for "The Fall"
A+
